The best coffee to start Saint Patrick’s Day

irish_coffee_01Irish coffee is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, stirred, and topped with thick cream. The coffee is drunk through the cream. The original recipe explicitly uses cream that has not been whipped, although drinks made with whipped cream are often sold as “Irish coffee”.

Carrinho de Café

24461_457470034319379_153115259_nThis cool coffee carts (mini semi trucks)don’t only sell coffee..ohh nooooo! Every cart besides having some colored thermoses, has it’s own personality, different colors, art work. Some are simple and others with music, umbrellas TV etc. etc.!
Apparently there is an annual competition of these coffee carts to see who has the most accommodating to the public and personality. Like the coordinator of the event would say “This could only happen in Bahia!”
These particular coffee carts started appearing in the 70s and now they’re part of the culture of the people from el Salvador Brazil.

Coffee and Caffeine

251444_405818609484522_1327761332_nWhich Brewing Method Has the Most?
Controllable factors that influence the caffeine content of a cup of coffee include how finely ground the beans are before brewing and the method and length of brewing time. the drip method, using finely ground beans, yields the highest amount of caffeine because the water is in contact with the grounds for the longest amount of time.
Back in ’79, Bunker and McWilliams published a paper after studying the caffeine content of common beverages. Here are their coffee-based findings (caffeine content noted in mg):
* Espresso: 1 cup (1.5–2 oz, 45–60 ml) = 100 mg.
* Brewed: 1 cup (7 oz, 207 ml) = 80–135 mg. (107.5 mg. average)
* Drip: 1 cup (7 oz, 207 ml) = 115–175 mg. (145 mg. average)
and instant coffee generally yields the least amount of caffeine, about 65mg per cup.

The Difference Between Espresso and Drip Coffe

165015_457032001029849_1916167449_nThe main differences between espresso coffee and drip coffee are the fineness of the grind and the brewing time.
The brewing time for espresso coffee is much shorter, made possible by espresso machines that generate up to 15 atmospheres (ATM) of pressure to force the water through the coffee.
Drip coffee is made by dripping boiling water over ground coffee, which is ground more coarsely than espresso coffee. The water filters through the coffee and falls into a pot. This process is slower than the espresso process, and hot water is in contact with the ground coffee for much longer. Surprisingly, a cup of drip coffee has more caffeine than a shot of espresso.
